Frequently asked questions about Calculus

What is Calculus?

Calculus is a branch of mathematics that encompasses the study of changes and movements, limits and areas. Before calculation was invented, mathematics was static: it could only help to calculate the behavior of objects that were perfectly still. Its study is subdivided into differential and integral Calculus.

The word “Calculus” comes from “stone” and, in ancient times, calculations were done with piles of stones. This specific branch of mathematics came to be called Calculus.

What is Calculus for?

Calculus is the language of science, and fluency in this language is fundamental for a successful career in science and engineering.

Calculus serves to develop the logical-mathematical capacity for the analysis of variations of magnitudes, derived from functions, among other techniques.

How long does it take to learn Calculus?

The time it takes to learn Calculus will depend on some variables such as the way you study, how much you already know and how much time you will dedicate. In general, the learning of Calculus 1 takes around 20 hours, and the learning of Calculus 2 takes 35 hours.

Where should I start learning Calculus?

Some of the fundamental prerequisites for learning Calculus are functions, module (or absolute value), power, radicalization, properties, logarithms, factoring and quadratic equations.
