What is Biotechnology?

Biotechnology is an area that takes advantage of cellular and biomolecular processes to develop technologies and products. Generally, these innovations focus on improving our health and making our planet more sustainable.

In other words, it is a science or a set of processes that has as it’s main objective the use of biological systems to achieve a purpose. It is an area that brings together research and especially biology.

What is Biotechnology for?

To have an idea, the making of beer and bread are examples of processes that fit the concept of biotechnology, in this case, with the use of yeast. These traditional processes generally use living organisms in their natural form.

With the advancement of research, however, biotechnology has enabled innovations of great impact. In agriculture, for example, plant seeds have been genetically modified to avoid pests.

In medicine, new drugs have been developed for several pathologies. The creation of vaccines is a good example of the use of biotechnology, as well as research to find a cure for diseases such as cancer and AIDS.

How long does it take to learn Biotechnology?

As Biotechnology can be applied to many areas, the time of study will depend on the branch you want to follow. A degree in Biotechnology takes 4 years and 2 years of training to be a technician.
